 Madam Chairperson, The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Regional Secretariat based in Windhoek, Namibia welcomes this opportunity to address Commissioners of the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights (ACHPR). MISA appreciates and commends the work of the Commission in strengthening human rights and democratic values in Africa, and its efforts to find African solutions to African problems.

Mukoko granted bail
Former news reader with the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) and director of the Zimbabwe Peace Project, Jestina Mukoko was on 6 May 2009 granted bail by Harare Magistrate, Catherine Chimanda after the defence reached a mutual agreement with the Attorney General’s office to that effect.

Minister condemns arrest of Journalists
The Deputy Minister of Media, Information and Publicity, Jameson Timba on 2 May 2009 condemned the arrest of Chronicle Editor, Brezhnev Malaba, reporter Nduduzo Tshuma and the paper’s general manager Sithembile Ncube citing that the criminal defamation charges against them as unfortunate and unacceptable as there are civil defamation laws of settling the matters by the parties which would have been aggrieved.
