High court judge, Justice Bharat Patel on 5 June 2009 granted the application by four freelance journalists, Stanley Gama, Stanley Kwenda, Jealous Mawarire and Valentine Maponga challenging the legal status of the Media and Information Commission (MIC).
The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has reportedly started receiving applications from media owners, with at least five new applicants making enquiries on the registration procedures.

On 3 May 2010 Zimbabweans join the rest of the world in commemorating World Press Freedom Day set by the United Nations to raise awareness on the importance of media freedom and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
